Auction 138: Our Highlights
The time is coming soon! From 18 to 20 April 2024, we look forward to welcoming you to our Auction 138 “ART & ICONS FROM THE ORTHODOX WORLD”. We would like to introduce you to three of our highlights in advance. Find out more about these three fascinating icons, which will be auctioned alongside around 2,900 other lots in the coming week.
(Russia, Novgorod, around 1500)
Single panel with a transverse strip on the reverse. Double Kowtscheg, egg tempera on chalk ground over canvas, gilded background and edge. 25 x 20.7 cm. Icon executed in extremely fine painting. The proportions of the elegantly elongated figures stand out against the stylised rocky backdrop. The robes, painted in vivid green and red, are structured by white folds. Damaged edge area.

Wooden panel with two sponki on the reverse, velvet cover on the reverse. Egg tempera on chalk ground. Oklad of gilded silver and full-surface decoration in shaded cloisonné enamel. 33.3 x 29.2 cm. Hallmarked with the mark of the district inspection administration with fineness ’84’ and master’s mark ‘O. KURLJUKOW’ in Cyrillic. Min. colour chips, enamel min. rest.

HWooden panel with a transverse moulding on the reverse. Kowtscheg, egg tempera on chalk ground, gilded nimbus. Gold riza with richly engraved decoration. Gilt silver triptych. 17.3 x 15 cm (centre icon), 39.5 x 51 cm (opened. The presented triptych shows the Mother of God Kazanskaya in the centre. The Mother of God is depicted in the shoulder section. Saints James and Paraskeva flank the Mother of God. The richly ornamented gold riza is adorned with the marginal saints ‘Saint Nikita, the Successor of Christ’ and Saint Paraskeva. The frame surrounding the icon shows the mandylion and the saints Bishop Gurij of Kazan and Bishop Barsonofij of Kazan. The triptych shows the Mother of God of the Sign in the upper picture. On the wings appear the Archangel Michael and the Apostle Peter on the left and the Archangel Gabriel and St Natalija on the right. Losses in the edge area (icon).
